NCSS Theme: Individual Development and Identity
Several of the characters in the book evolve and change. Their perceptions of school, home life, and community are affected by the teaching of Miss Agnes. For example, Fred's mother originally does not see the utility in school; however, when she sees the changes in her daughters, she begins to appreciate the importance of education.
