Geography
When Fred and her friend Bertha went to meet their new teacher, Miss Agnes invited them for tea. Miss Agnes put milk in her tea and spoke "funny," and Miss Agnes explained that was because she was English. The new teacher used this as a a teachable moment and pulled out a big book with a map in it so she could show the girls where England was located and its position relative to Alaska. In this way, Miss Agnes taught the social studies concept of geography based on the curiosity of the children. She exposed the children who only knew of their life in a small town in Alaska to a world that was much larger than they'd ever imagined.
