Historical Timeline
In chapter 11, Miss Agnes pulled out a piece of paper and made a timeline to mark historical events as they discussed them on a timeline. She drew a timeline from BCE to CE and marked 1100 to show the era of Robin Hood, corresponding with the book they were reading. She also included a war picture for the year 1938, which most of the children could connect with. On the left side of the timeline, she added a picture of cavemen to show what life was like that long ago. She also included pictures of the Russians coming to Alaska in 1700, another event that would resonate with the children living in Alaska. This gave the students an idea of past events compared to their present lives. As Fred says on page 70, "It was good to have that line. We could see how long ago things were happening with it. It made my thinking go straight." The timeline also impacted the wider community, as the students excitedly shared their understanding of timelines with their caregivers. When Fred told her grandfather about the timeline, he created a timeline with Fred and put dates important to them on it.
